New Sensory & Odor Evaluations

Olfaction, the sense of smell, though the least explored sensory modality for humans, plays a vital role in our daily lives. Consumers are seeking products that are associated with pleasant odors/scents, especially, if they have long lasting capabilities.

One product category utilizing olfactory is perfume. A report by Fortune Business Insights states that the global perfume market size is projected to reach $43.2 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 5%. With tremendous growth potential, odors will remain at the forefront of consumers minds.

Eurofins | CRL has the capability to perform sensory evaluations/odor evaluations utilizing our panel of odor judges.

We are thrilled to announce that we now have multiple trained and certified (by Olfasense) Odor Judges!

The odor judges received practical session training which included:

  • determining the odor detection threshold of the reference gas n-butanol, based on the criteria (geometric mean, standard deviation) of the European standard EN 13725(*)
  • odor intensity training by using chemical substances (e.g., artificial sweat, isovaleric acid, others) via an Olfactometer
  • using Sniffing Sticks on specific substances for panel selection, training on odor intensity assessment and descriptive testing

Clinical studies that can be conducted utilizing our odor judges:

  • Evaluating malodor (preventing/masking)
  • Determining fragrance intensities
  • Evaluating products for dampness/high heat and humidity, using EGC (Environmental Growth Chambers – controlled temperature and humidity)
  • Long lasting effects (1 hour/8 hours/24 hours post product application)

Product categories (including, but not limited to):

  • Body Care: deodorant, antiperspirants, bar soaps, perfumes
  • Hair Care: hair products such as shampoos, conditioners, leave in treatments
  • Fabric Care: Cotton/polyester

Olfactory products are being sought out at a staggering rate as consumers love pleasant smells and how they evoke a particular emotion or mood. Eurofins | CRL provides a variety of odor testing methods which can be customized to fit your needs. We can help get your product to market quickly, while also providing safe and reliable data so you can meet new and impending regulation standards.
